Dammit, Jim, I'm an adventurer, not a space marine! ;)
Well, it's not MECHWARRIOR.

Just an alternate reality, mercenary leading, "flew" mission, 90s (?) game. :D

Seriously, if you were anyone else, I'd think you were trolling...

Okay, well, here's what I've said so far: It's a game that was released in the 90s that lets you lead a mercenary group that flies various aircraft in the "future" of 2011.

HINT 1: At the time this game was released, this game was so advanced and required so many system resources that no home computer had the capability to properly run this game at anything close to a semi-decent framerate.

HINT 2: This game was released as both a diskette version and a CD-ROM version. The CD-ROM version included the expansion pack and voice pack, both of which were separate purchases for the diskette version.

Hmm ... is this a Space Combat Game, or a Space TRADING AND Combat Game? :)

Nope. While there is combat, there's no "trading" in this game and it does not take place in outer space.

HINT: This game was released in 1993.

The date confirms what I think it is now. Is the game you're looking for Strike Commander?
Released in 1993 -
"flew missions" - Strike Commander is a combat flight simulation video game
Strike Commander has been called "Privateer on Earth," due to the mercenary role-playing in the game.
The player accepts missions from interesting characters and gets paid for doing them which allows the player to buy more weapons. The missions involve flying an F-16 Fighting Falcon and, in the last missions of the game, the more advanced F-22, while accomplishing certain objectives and missions.

I've NEVER played this game. I've heard of it, but mostly just the name. I know pretty much zero about it.

I remember a console game that was set sometime several centuries ago, and there's like 9 characters you can pick - and each of them have their own story - but they're all after the same thing.

You wrote it's set sometime several centuries ago, but which century, exactly?

The characters come from different time lines; but it's defined as between the 16th and 17th century.

Well, I originally played it in the arcade... but at home, I played it all the time on the Playstation.

Damn. Even nailed the right one. I was specifically thinking of Soul Edge. Was expecting someone to guess Soul Calibur.

As far as I know, the only game in that series that was on the original PlayStation was Soul Edge. My brother and I also played it quite a bit, so the time period for the characters suggested which game as well. :)

Anyway... I remember an arcade/computer/console game that could be played by one-to-four people cooperatively and has had numerous sequels, the most recent of which was given the same name as the original title in this series.

Was it a first person view?

No, it wasn't. The particular game I'm thinking of had a top-down or bird's-eye view of the characters, enemies, environment, etc.
